Schiller à la cour de weimar
DETAILS OF THE WORK AND THE ARTIST:
Pierre Cottin (1823–c. 1887) was a genre and landscape painter, born in Chappelle‑Saint‑Denis (near Paris) and a student of Jazet. He exhibited at the Salon beginning in 1845, and also in London from 1876 to 1879.
Schiller at the Court of Weimar depicts Friedrich Schiller reciting his drama Don Carlos before Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar and his court.
Schiller reads from Don Carlos at the court of Weimar to Karl August, Grand Duke of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach, and his wife Luise.
The male figure in shadow at the left edge of the image possibly represents Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Dated 1877.
